Republic of Korea won sixteenth gold medal at Asian Women’s Junior Handball Championship

The Republic of Korea has won the 17th Asian Women’s Junior Handball Championship. With this title, they have won a total of 16 titles out of 17 editions of the competition, missing only one in 2022 when they did not participate in the competition due to travel restrictions and the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

Ten nations competed in the event held at the Kowloon Park Sports Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui, in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, from June 30 – July 9, 2023.

The participating teams were divided into two preliminary groups as follows:

Group A: Hong Kong (China), Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Japan, Republic of Korea

Group B: India, I. R. Iran, Uzbekistan, P.R. China, Chinese Taipei

The Republic of Korea and Japan from Group A, and P. R. China and Chinese Taipei from Group B, advanced to the semi-finals. Kazakhstan, I. R. Iran, Hong Kong (China), and Uzbekistan had to play in the 5th–8th placement matches after they failed to progress to the semi-finals. India takes on Kuwait for the 9th–10th place match.

In the semi-finals, the Republic of Korea and P. R. China defeated Chinese Taipei and Japan, respectively, and entered the final.

In the bronze medal match, Japan defeated Chinese Taipei 43–23.

In the final match, the Republic of Korea defeated P.R. China 34-15.
